Wow. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting with Vinland Saga, but what I *got* was a bloody, dark and intense story about the price of peace, the need for vengeance and the sort of person you might need to be to survive in a world of war and death.
Our main character works for a man he has sworn to kill, and bloodily ends anyone he has to toward that end. but how and why he got to that point is the bulk of this book - a tale about parental love, about responsibility, about when to fight and when not to. It was so engaging that I devoured it in one sitting.
The art is clean and easy to follow. The characters are complex and likeable. And this may be the first thing that made me want to go learn more about the historical vikings instead of just sitting back and being content with the weird Americanized cinema vikings I'm familiar with.
